A 3D target is a lifelike animal replica used for archery practice, field courses and competition. Unlike a flat target face, a 3D target has a realistic body shape, allowing archers to practise shooting at different angles and distances.

The target contains internal scoring rings that represent the vital areas of the animal. These scoring zones are used during 3D tournaments and also help archers improve shot placement during training.

For the most realistic experience, the target should be as close as possible to the natural size of the animal it represents.

The group number indicates the approximate size of the target animal. Group 4 targets are the smallest, while Group 1 targets are the largest.

3D archery targets are made from specialist foam. The most common material is self-healing foam, which closes around the arrow hole after the arrow has been removed.

The foam does not completely repair itself, but its structure helps reduce visible damage and extends the useful life of the target. Foam density and construction can vary between brands and models.

The centre scoring area receives the greatest number of arrow impacts and usually wears faster than the rest of the target. Many premium 3D targets therefore include a replaceable core.

Once the core becomes worn, you can replace this section instead of purchasing a complete new target. This can reduce long-term costs, especially for archery clubs and frequent shooters.

Internal scoring rings identify the scoring zones used in competitions. Their position is based on the vital area of the animal represented by the target.

It is not recommended to leave a 3D target permanently outside. Rain, frost, sunlight and temperature changes can gradually deteriorate the foam and cause the painted finish to fade.

Targets that remain outdoors generally break down faster than targets that are properly protected. When the target is not being used, we recommend moving it indoors or covering it with suitable weather protection.

Smaller Group 4 targets are generally the most affordable, while larger and more detailed Group 1 and Group 2 targets usually require a higher budget.

Bow type and arrow speed

Make sure the foam is suitable for the speed and energy of your arrows. Powerful compound bows generally require denser and more durable foam.

Replaceable core

A replaceable core is recommended for frequent shooters because it allows the most heavily used section to be renewed separately.

Indoor or outdoor use

Consider how easily the target can be moved or covered when it is not being used.

Correct maintenance helps keep your target in good condition and extends the lifespan of the foam and painted finish.
